Rainfall and Temperature Report – Blahová and Surroundings (May 2026)

May brought the most important meteorological turnaround of this spring. The first half of the month continued the trend of April's drought, but between May 12 and 17, a highly active cyclonic period dumped the bulk of the monthly rainfall in just a single week. By the end of the month, sweaters were promptly replaced with shorts

Rainfall and Temperature Report – Blahová and Surroundings (May 2026)

I. RAINFALL CONDITIONS

According to the measurements, May turned out much more favorable, with most stations reaching 43% to 79% of the long-term norm (56.0 mm). Although the moisture deficit did not completely disappear, the timing of the rainfall was the best possible for the vegetation.

1. Monthly Totals and Deviation from the Norm

  • Malý Lég: 44.5 mm (79% of the norm, i.e., a deficit of -11.5 mm) 🏆 The wettest spot for the third consecutive month!

  • Blahová: 37.1 mm (66% of the norm, i.e., a deficit of -18.9 mm) 📈 Back to the midfield after the previous historical low.

  • Lehnice-Sása: 35.0 mm (63% of the norm, i.e., a deficit of -21.0 mm)

  • Dunajská Streda: 33.3 mm (60% of the norm, i.e., a deficit of -22.7 mm)

  • Janíky: 24.0 mm (43% of the norm, i.e., a deficit of -32.0 mm) 🛑 Janíky missed out on the larger showers this time.

2. The Decisive Mid-Month Rainfall Wave (May 12–17)

Just like in April, most of the month (24 days) passed almost completely dry, and 90% of the monthly total fell within a single week.

  • The Great Soaking Rain (May 15–16): These two days saved the season. On May 15, steady soaking rain brought 11.0 mm to Malý Lég and 10.1 mm to Blahová. The next day, May 16, the skies opened up even more: 21.7 mm fell in Blahová, 22.0 mm in Malý Lég, and 19.4 mm in Dunajská Streda in a single day! Sása also recorded a nice 16.0 mm.

II. TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS (BLAHOVÁ)

May temperatures perfectly reflected the transition from a pleasant spring to early summer. Frosts were a thing of the past, and true heatwaves arrived by the end of the month.

1. Temperature Extremes in Blahová

  • 🌡️ Hottest Day of the Month (May 27): +32.1 °C! This is a purely summer value. Heat peaked in the final days of the month: on May 26, it reached +30.6 °C, marking the first hot days of 2026 (when Tmax reaches or exceeds 30 °C).

  • 🥶 Coldest Night of the Month (May 17): +4.9 °C. Following the heavy rains, cold air rushed in on the backside of the front, bringing the only sub-5 °C minimum of the month. The rest of the month saw very mild nights; for instance, on the morning of May 21, the temperature did not drop below +14.0 °C.

  • 🔥 Warmest Day on Average (May 27): A daily mean temperature of +24.0 °C (equivalent to a late-July average).

  • 🧊 Coldest Day on Average (May 17): A mean value of +10.0 °C (the peak of the post-rain cooling, when the daytime maximum stopped at just +13.9 °C).

III. MICROCLIMATIC SUMMARY

The May data beautifully demonstrates the biological synergy between rainfall and temperature. Until May 12, daily averages stayed firmly between +15 °C and +19 °C with high maximums – a combination that, along with the drought, was critically stressing the plants.

The major rainfall bomb of May 15–16 (when Sárrét received nearly 32 mm in two days) arrived at the perfect time: coupled with the cooling (daily averages around +10 °C to +11 °C), the water did not evaporate immediately but managed to soak deep into the soil.

This accumulated soil moisture was the key factor ensuring that when the southern airflow triggered a heatwave after May 23, pushing maximums from +25 °C up to +32.1 °C, nature did not scorch but instead experienced explosive growth.

From a local perspective, Malý Lég (44.5 mm) remains in incredible form, attracting clouds like a magnet this spring. Janíky (24.0 mm) was slightly less fortunate with the path of the shower tracks this time, meaning the effects of the drought persisted longer there.
